Stop Playing Catch-Up and Build an IT Strategy That Future-Proofs Your Association

By Daniel Elacqua, PMP, MBA

The theme for the upcoming ASAE MMC + Tech Conference is "The Future is Yours to Create, “and that resonates deeply for me and my team. For associations, this isn't just a catchy slogan - it's a call to action.

In today's rapidly evolving landscape, it's imperative to shift from reactive IT solutions to proactive, integrated IT strategies that drive innovation and resilience.

Traditionally, many associations have treated IT as a support function where they simply address issues as they arise - and we all know how many issues there can be on any given day. Unfortunately, this approach often leads to missed opportunities, wasted resources, and a constant game of catch-up.

To truly lead and innovate, associations must embed IT strategy into their core organizational planning.

Below I’ve outlined some real-world examples of organizations who have intentionally and successfully implemented proactive IT strategies.

Real-World Examples of Leading with IT Strategy

In a recent conversation published in the WSJ, Matt Hunt, a managing director with Deloitte Services, and Amir Kazmi, CIO and Digital Officer of WestRock, a leader in sustainable packaging, talk about how tools like automation, XR, and AI are changing the game, and why future-ready associations need bold tech leaders to make the most of them.

WestRock has embraced digital technologies like AI and automation to enhance productivity and reduce waste. By integrating these technologies into their core operations, they've not only improved efficiency but also strengthened customer relationships.

As Kazmi said: “…Embrace future-back thinking. It’s easy to get caught up in incremental thinking and the day-to-day; it’s important to pause and reflect on technologies enabling key market shifts to figure out which ones will accelerate your business. In everything you do, the focus should remain squarely on delivering value for employees, customers, and shareholders.”

Other examples of organizations across various industries that have proactively leveraged technology to achieve strategic objectives were highlighted in The CIO Index.

A few of these examples include:

Healthcare

The Cleveland Clinic expanded its reach and improved patient care by implementing telehealth platforms, especially crucial during the pandemic.

Financial Services
JP Morgan Chase enhanced data security by investing in advanced cybersecurity technologies, including encryption and threat detection mechanisms.

Manufacturing
Toyota optimized its supply chain by adopting an Internet of Things (IoT) and analytics, leading to efficient and lean production processes.

Key Takeaways for Associations

I’ve boiled down the key takeaways for associations into four primary areas of focus.
  1. Integrate IT into Strategic Planning
Ensure that IT leaders have a seat at the decision-making table. Their insights are crucial for aligning technology with organizational goals.

  2. Adopt Agile Methodologies
Embrace flexible approaches that allow for rapid adaptation to changing member needs and technological advancements.

  3. Invest in Scalable Infrastructure
Build systems that can grow and adapt, ensuring long-term resilience and the ability to leverage emerging technologies.

  4. Foster a Culture of Innovation
Encourage experimentation and continuous learning within your organization to stay ahead of the curve. To paraphrase Amir Kazmi, your association should strive to be a team of “learn it alls.”

The future of your association really is yours to create. By proactively integrating IT strategy into your organization's core planning, you position yourself not just to adapt to the future but to shape it. Let's move beyond playing catch-up and start leading the way.
